Was 'Jana Gana Mana' written in praise of the British?

Rabindranath Tagore clarified in a letter to a young Pulind Bihari Sen, explaining that during a Congress session, a friend requested him to praise King George V. In response, he wrote 'Jana Gana Mana', celebrating the eternal guide of India's destiny, not any king.
